History and Renewal
A Bookshelf for Adults That Stimulates Curiosity
Based on the concept of “encountering a wealth of knowledge,” “Matsumoto Honbako” is a sophisticated book hotel characterized by a taut, austere space designed with meticulous precision. As part of a broader renovation initiative for the Asama Onsen area, it offers a guide to “Matsumoto Jūjō”—an experience that allows guests to fully enjoy the entire region while stimulating their intellectual curiosity.

“Matsumoto Jūchō” is the umbrella term for a revitalization project centered on “Koyanagi,” a long-established ryokan founded in the third year of the Jōkyō era (1686), and aims to serve as a “catalyst for area revitalization.”Envisioning “people strolling through the hot spring town,” two cafes have been established off-site, while four entrances have been created to “open up” the previously closed ryokan, with a bookstore, bakery, and other shops now located within the ryokan grounds. The design is intended to let visitors enjoy the entire Asama Onsen area, so please take a stroll and visit the various shops along the way.
Located inside the bookstore on the first floor of Matsumoto Honbako, the “Adult Book Box” and “Children’s Book Box” utilize the former bathhouse from the facility’s “Koyanagi” era, allowing visitors to experience what it’s like to “immerse themselves in the world of books.”While the bathtubs, faucets, and washbasins from that era have been preserved, the space is decorated with noren curtains and wooden tubs to evoke the spirit of “Koyanagi,” making it a landmark of the facility.
Travel to Matsumoto Airport by private jet. On board the flight departing from Haneda Airport, we’ll offer special content titled “Low-Altitude Flight Approaching Mount Fuji.” This is original SKY TREK content, produced in collaboration with “on the trip,” that explores the history and charm of Mount Fuji. We’ll provide you with an even richer experience of Mount Fuji—a sight that never fails to move you, no matter how many times you see it.
Matsumoto City in Nagano Prefecture is surrounded by magnificent natural scenery, including the Northern Alps and the Utsukushigahara Plateau. While you can certainly enjoy the great outdoors, Matsumoto is also a castle town where historic streetscapes—led by the National Treasure, Matsumoto Castle—remain intact, offering stunning views even from the air. Please enjoy the scenery as it changes with the seasons.

Renovating the Asama Onsen Area
There are a total of 12 facilities operated under the “Matsumoto Jūchō” brand, ranging from two hotels and two cafés to a distillery producing homemade cider. Since many of these facilities are located outside the hotel grounds, it’s a great idea to drop by them on a whim while strolling around town.Additionally, Koyanagi-no-Yu—located in the center of the hotel grounds and meaning “The Bath of the Lower-Ranked Samurai”—is a hot spring reserved exclusively for hotel guests. About a 5-minute walk away is Biwa-no-Yu, a day-use hot spring that was once the private bath of the Matsumoto domain lord. Please take this opportunity to enjoy the entire area.

Asama Hot SpringsAsama Hot Springs
A Hot Spring Renowned for Its Beauty, with a History Spanning 1,300 Years
The waters of Asama Onsen are alkaline simple springs, known for their so-called “beauty-enhancing” properties. Boasting one of the highest water yields among hot springs in Nagano Prefecture, and with a source temperature of approximately 50°C, they require no dilution or heating—a key feature is that many facilities offer a “completely free-flowing” bathing experience. It is said to have been enjoyed as far back as the Asuka period in 698 AD, when it appeared in the *Nihon Shoki* under the name “Tsukama.” Please enjoy Asama Onsen, which was cherished by the lord of Matsumoto Castle during the Edo period and by many literary figures such as Akiko Yosano and Yumeji Takehisa during the Meiji period.
