What is Minamidaito Island?

It is said to be derived from the island word "ufuagarijima," which means an island far to the east of the sea by the ancient people of Okinawa.

The island is made of volcanoes and coral in the Pacific Ocean, about 360 km east of the main island of Okinawa.
It was created 48 million years ago in the New Guinea Islands and has moved 3,200 km, and continues to move even now.

It has been inhabited for only about 110 years. You can feel the energy and mystery of nature on this island.

Tamaki Shokai on Hachijojima Island

Minami-Daito Island was discovered by a Russian ship in 1820, and its possession was declared as part of Okinawa Prefecture in 1885.

In 1900, a pioneer group from Hachijojima, led by Hanemon Tamaki, began to settle the Daito Islands. All infrastructure, from travel to the islands to stores, schools, and post offices, was managed by the Tamaki Shokai, and the islands were effectively "company-owned" because local administration by the Japanese government did not extend to them. The main business was the production and sale of sugarcane to sugar companies. As a result, many people with roots in Hachijo-jima still live on the island.

Naval Bar Pool

A natural seawater pool on Minamidaito Island, a military heritage site with remnants of its former use by the Japanese Navy. The pool was formed naturally by seawater pooling on the reef. The water is highly transparent and has a beautiful emerald green color.
Small fish and other marine life inhabit the pool, making snorkeling and underwater observation safe and enjoyable.
