Eel Exploration Tour

Japanese eel has been a national dish since the Edo period (1603-1867), when kabayaki (broiled eel) became widespread and was eaten in inn towns throughout Japan as an invigorating meal for travelers on their journeys. In Japan, where there are many wetlands, eels were caught at the mouths of estuaries, rivers, swamps, and all other bodies of water.

Yet, are there any natural Japanese eels being served at eel restaurants these days? The Japanese eel is now listed as an endangered species due to a number of reasons, including overfishing of juvenile glass eels and habitat changes caused by river development.

The Japanese eel is so vigorous that it is at the top of the food chain in rivers. Are Japanese eels really no longer living in Japan?

In this project, you will experience "catching and eating" precious natural Japanese eels in the rivers of Okayama in cooperation with AZERO Group "Creating Satoyama of the Future" and WASUKIYA. Eel catching professionals will surely invite you to try Japanese eels. A Zero Group WASUKIYA also organizes a project to increase the number of wild eels and to pass on the eels to future generations.

Eel fishing experience Traditional fishing method "Jigoku

You will experience catching natural eels using the traditional fishing method called "jigoku" under the guidance of Tadasuya's wild game masters. You will also eat the natural eels you caught yourself in an eel bowl.
On the first day, participants will learn about the ecology of eels and set up the jigoku to predict the movements of eels at night.
On the second day, we will retrieve the jigoku we set up. When the jigoku is tilted and the eel is found, it is an unforgettable experience.

creating a river (esp. by flooding)

The giant salamander, one of the world's largest amphibians, lives in Nishiawakura Village. The giant salamander was the impetus for this project, and we will search for wild giant salamanders living in the rivers in the village with researchers from Tasukiya, who are working with the town office to promote the restoration of the river's natural environment. You can also see the stairs and masonry that have been installed in the river so that they can live there forever, and experience the work of river restoration together.
